Sean Macdonald re-signs with JackJumpers in epic comeback story

In what’s set to be an epic comeback story, JackJumpers guard Sean Macdonald has re-signed and will return to the club after injury for the 2026-27 NBL season.

Macdonald ruptured his Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) when playing for the Australian Boomers on July 31 last year, facing surgery and extensive rehabilitation since.

Now, the 25-year-old is “bigger, stronger and faster than ever before” according to JackJumpers Coach Scott Roth.

“Sean’s comeback is a living, breathing example of our culture of grit and grind, it’s one for the books that’s for sure,” Roth said.

“It’s a great credit to Seany, he’s worked hard every single day, and that takes great fortitude.

“He’s been here with us since day one of our journey, and he’s such a valuable part of our program. He can play multiple positions, is a great connector for us, and is a top tier leader as well.

“Having Sean back on the court for us for another season is great news and the fact that he’s bigger, stronger and faster than ever before is a great bonus too.”

For the past eight months, Macdonald has been working with the JackJumpers High Performance Team, led by Ryan Carroll, with the support of experts at UTAS.

Macdonald said he had to learn to walk again, but now he feels stronger than ever before.

“It’s been an intense time, but you find your silver lining too,” Macdonald said. “I’ve been able to use this time to rebuild my body and strength without the demands of game play and training, and the result is that I feel stronger than I did pre-injury.

“I just can’t wait to get back on court and show my appreciation to everyone who has supported me through my recovery. The club and our fans have put a huge amount of faith in me during the recovery process, and I want to reward that on the court this season.

Macdonald first joined the JackJumpers in their inaugural season in 2020-21 as a Development Player. After three seasons as a DP, Macdonald became a full roster player in the 2024-25 season. He has now inked a new one-year deal for the 2026-27 season.
