Tasmania JackJumpers are proud to announce floor general Josh Magette will make up the third key piece in the club’s leadership group after being voted in by the playing group this week.
Inaugural JackJumpers Captain Clint Steindl has been re-elected to the position and will again be supported by Jarrad Weeks who will act as Co-Vice Captain alongside import Magette.
“We’re thrilled to announce our captaincy group ahead of our second season. Clint and Weeksy did a phenomenal job last season, they really helped instil the culture and work ethic that underpinned the success both on the court and in the community” Head Coach Scott Roth said.
“I’m really delighted that Josh has been voted in by the group. He’s a proven on-court leader, dictating our plays and giving every single player more confidence in their role”.
“It is a little bit unusual that an import is part of the leadership group, but I think it speaks to his character and the respect the guys have for him” Roth said.
The 32 year old American re-signed with the JackJumpers for the 2022/23 Hungry Jack’s NBL season following an incredible inaugural season, where he quickly became a fan favourite.
Magette says he’s proud to help play an even greater role in the club’s ongoing success.
“I’m greatly honoured to be voted in by the guys, to have their faith and trust in me, and I hope I can repay that.
“Anybody who plays the point guard naturally takes on some leadership but as last season went on, I found my voice more and I’m just excited to continue to grow with this group” Magette said.
The captaincy group was announced at a team bonfire on Tasmania’s North West Coast during the Bulk Nutrients Preseason Camp.
“Scott brought us together right before we ate to announce it and it was a pretty special feeling, just to know what all went into it, and just to know how great Clint and Weeksy are at their jobs so to be apart of that is really special” Magette said.
Captain Clint Steindl said it was an honour to take on the Captaincy title for a second year.
“To be able to lead this club in its early infancy and now to have Josh there and Jarrad again, we get to leave an imprint on the team and club and drive to forward.
“Josh is a great on court leader, he’s putting us in spots and spacing the floor so I think his leadership will continue to be valued there”.
Weeks said he was delighted to share the Vice-Captaincy role.
“Yeah only half the load this season!” Weeks laughed.
“It’s obviously really special to be re-elected by your peers. I learnt a lot last season and now Jet coming in will only help me learn and evolve as a leader, he’s played all over the world and in the highest league so I’m really pleased he’s been elevated” he said.
Steindl, Weeks and Magette will lead the JackJumpers in the first of two Preseason Practice games presented by Begents tonight, when they host the South East Melbourne Phoenix at Ulverstone Sports and Leisure Centre.
Steindl won’t take the court as he continues to recover from a leg injury.
