JackJumpers Get Green Light From Basketball Tasmania to Make Basketball Tasmania's Number One Sport by 2024

The Tasmania JackJumpers have partnered with Basketball Tasmania to make basketball the number one sport in Tasmania by 2024. 

Under a strategic partnership announced today, the Hungry Jack’s NBL’s 10th team and Basketball Tasmania have made the following commitments:

• Basketball to become the number one sport in Tasmania by 2024
• Increase the number of registered players in Tasmania from 14,000 to 20,000
• Create talent pathways for all athletes, coaches, officials and administrators from the grassroots through to the professional level
• Ensure the ongoing success and viability of Basketball Tasmania (BTAS), Tasmania JackJumpers and the wider Tasmanian basketball community

Tasmania JackJumpers Chief Executive Simon Brookhouse said: “With Tasmania now having secured its own team in the NBL we have formed a partnership with Basketball Tasmania to ensure the sport continues to grow and flourish across the whole state.

“We will work together to ensure we continue to boost participation in the sport and create pathways for athletes, coaches, officials and administrators from the grassroots to the NBL and all the way to the NBA.

“This is also a key strategic aim of our partnership with the Tasmanian Government as we deliver a team for all Tasmanians. Every Tasmanian who wants to play basketball should have an opportunity to do so and we will do everything we can as a sport to ensure they can.

“We have already secured over 2,600 foundation members, appointed our inaugural Head Coach Scott Roth, a former NBA player and coach, and work is underway on the redevelopment of a world class venue at the Derwent Entertainment Centre ahead of our first game in the NBL in October.”

Basketball Tasmania Chief Executive Chris McCoy said: “Basketball throughout the state and country has never been stronger and still has massive growth opportunities. In Tasmania, we have had a 34% growth in registered participants over the last five years and we expect that growth to accelerate significantly with the exposure that the Tasmania JackJumpers will provide.

“Basketball Tasmania is excited to be partnering with the JackJumpers with the collective goal to be the number one sport in Tasmania by 2024. Together we can drive the sport in each of the major indicators of success – participation, development and pathways.”

Tasmania Sports Minister Jane Howlett said: “I congratulate Basketball Tasmania and the Tasmania JackJumpers on this important partnership.

“Basketball is surging in popularity in Tasmania, stimulated by increased profile and media coverage from the formation of the Tasmania JackJumpers and development of the Derwent Entertainment Centre. This latest venture can only be positive for the continued growth of basketball and participation in the sport across the state.”
