The Tasmania JackJumpers stand with the Australian basketball community to applaud the outstanding achievement of the Opals winning a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics.
Speaking on behalf of the Club, CEO Christine Finnegan said “the Opals bronze medal is testament to the outstanding talent that Australian basketball is producing and we could not be prouder of their achievement.”
“The Opals have shown the world the level of talent that is being produced in Australia and that is exciting for the future of basketball in this Country. With the WNBL about to be reinvigorated under a new ownership model it is exciting to think about what might transpire in future years and Olympics,” Finnegan said.
We applaud all of the women who represented the Opals but must make particular reference to Alanna Smith, daughter of our COO Darren Smith who made an enormous contribution to last night’s victory
“I have sat alongside Darren and seen the dedication he and Simone have put into their daughters basketball careers and could not be happier to see the fruits of their dedication rewarded with a bronze medal,” Finnegan said.
Alanna is a Tasmanian born athlete so Tasmania so once again this beautiful state has plenty to cheer about.
The JackJumpers acknowledged the outstanding achievement of all athletes that competed in Paris making it Australia’s most successful games outside of Sydney.
“We are so proud to be a small part of the Australian sporting landscape and understand the hard work and dedication that is required to play on the global sporting stage. The outstanding achievements particularly of Australia’s female athletes highlights that female sport in this Country is thriving and we can’t wait to put our case forward to be part of that with a bid for a JackJumpers WNBL license in the not too distant future,” Finnegan said.
