Emerging star Macdonald inks contract extension

The Tasmania JackJumpers are pleased to announce that talented guard Sean Macdonald will remain with the club until the end of the 2025/26 season after inking a contract extension.

Macdonald, who Head Coach Scott Roth has touted as the club’s ‘Next Star’, has thrived in the JackJumpers program since coming in as a Development Player (DP) from the club’s inaugural season.

After three years as a DP, Macdonald was already contracted to become a full roster player from the 24/25 season and has now inked a new deal to stay in Tasmania for at least one additional season.

“It would be an understatement to say we’re very proud of Sean and his development in the last 3 years. He has embraced everything our program is about, and he is proof of what can be achieved when you buy in and put in the work” General Manager of Basketball, Mika Vukona said.

“He has flourished in our system and this new contract is due reward for his efforts, and our faith in what’s to come for him over the coming seasons. Extending his contract was a no brainer for both parties and we’re looking forward to watching his growth and impact continue to track in the right direction” Vukona said.

24-year-old Macdonald has become emerged as one of the League’s most versatile and talented guards and was rewarded for another outstanding season named as the Hungry Jack’s NBL ‘Most Improved Player’ at the 2024 Andrew Gaze MVP Awards in February, as well as being a finalist in the sixth man of the year at the awards, alongside housemate Will Magnay.

Macdonald took the court for the JackJumpers in all 37 games in NBL24, averaging 8 points, 2.2 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game in an average of 22.8 minutes.

He played an average of 29 minutes across the five game Championship Series in what was widely dubbed as the greatest finals campaign by a Development Player in NBL history, including being called into the starting 5 for the Game 5 decider, a testament to the faith the JackJumpers coaching group have in the young talent.

“I’m really happy to be extending my time in Tassie” Macdonald said.

“It’s taken a huge amount of work to achieve what we have over the last few years and been an unbelievable ride so far.

“I think my growth and improvement is a testament to the program, and the investment the coaches, players and staff have in me and I’m excited about what’s to come over the next few years” Macdonald said.

Macdonald is currently playing in the NBL1 North with the Darwin Salties, where he was last season named as the club’s joint MVP.
