The Tasmania JackJumpers will be playing for a very special cause in the last home game of the NBL24 season, as the club prepares for the third annual ‘Teal Game’ supporting local gynaecological cancer foundation, SHE [Support, Hope, Education] - the club’s official charity partner.
This Saturday’s game against Perth Wildcats at MyState Bank Arena will raise funds and awareness for SHE and their dream of creating a state-of-the-art cancer wellness centre in the Hobart CBD.
The JackJumpers partnership with S.H.E is inspired by the plight of Jo Harris, who sadly lost her long battle with ovarian cancer last April.
“We’ll be playing to honour Jo Harris. Jo’s fight and her family’s strength continue to be such an inspiration to our entire club. Unfortunately, this will be the first edition of this game that she won’t be at which will be an incredibly emotional but important game in the short history of our club” CEO Christine Finnegan said.
Last year’s Teal game raised more than $55,000 for SHE, making a significant financial and educational contribution to the charity’s efforts.
The launch of the game follows a significant milestone for SHE, who last month announced the security of a premises for a Cancer Wellness Centre in Hobart’s CBD, with the assistance of University of Tasmania, a long-held dream of the Harris family and SHE.
“We’ve made a lot of progress over the last 12 months and have now secured a premises with the help of University of Tasmania. We’re now hoping to have that facility open in the next 12 months or so, and create a sanctuary for cancer patients in Tasmania which is on par with that of the rest of the country” SHE Chair, Scott Harris explained.
While Saturday’s game is sold out, fans outside the Arena are encouraged to dig deep, and donate to SHE by buying a virtual seat or bidding in the online silent auction to support thousands of women battling gynaecological cancers.
“We want to galvanise our entire Tasmanians around this cause to continue the momentum for SHE, and continue to raise awareness about the limited signs and symptoms of the insidious diseases” Finnegan said.
Earlier this month the club revealed the 2024 Teal Uniform, which the players will wear this Saturday and is available for retail sales online and at the MyState Bank Arena merchandise store.
The jersey features a small tribute to Jo Harris with her name etched on the left shoulder of the jersey, along with the SHE Teal Ribbon Logo on the back, ‘Tassie Goes Teal’ on the left hip, and the same ant stripe as the home jersey across the uniform.
The game-worn jerseys will be signed by each player and auctioned off to raise money for SHE, along with a number of key fundraising initiatives including virtual seats available for purchase online, free bucket hats for donations over $30, Lost Edge clothing and Mon Made jewellery will activate on the concourse with a portion of sales being donated to SHE and generous donations from JackJumpers partners, including SRT Logistics will again donate to S.H.E for every 3-pointer scored by the JackJumpers during the game with a ‘Three-for-SHE’ by SRT.
