The Tasmania JackJumpers will celebrate a major milestone this week, the club’s 5th birthday (October 1), marking five incredible years since the team was introduced to the NBL and started a historic and impactful continuation of the State’s basketball legacy.
What began as a bold vision to bring elite basketball back to Tasmania has become one of the great success stories in Australian sport. In just five years, the JackJumpers have cemented themselves as a competitive force on the court and a unifying symbol of Tasmanian pride off it.
“We’re incredibly proud to mark this occasion, reflect on what has been achieved in the last 5 years, and importantly look to the future as we continue to build on the strong foundations that have been laid” CEO Christine Finnegan said.
Finnegan was one of the first employees of the expansion club, appointed at Chief Commercial Officer in 2020 even before the club had a name, identity and place in Tasmanian sporting history.
“Birthdays or anniversaries are a special time to recognize the many people that have contributed to the journey including our voluntary Board, past and present coaches, players and staff. It’s been an incredibly challenging but rewarding journey and I couldn’t be prouder to play a part in creating a brand that represents the people of Tasmania both on and off the court” Finnegan said.
From the club’s historic debut in the 2021–22 NBL season to winning their first championship in 2024, the JackJumpers have inspired a passionate and ever-growing fanbase across the state and beyond, engaging with an estimated 500,000 people through game days, community activations and club initiatives.
“This milestone is a celebration of everyone who believed in the dream of a Tasmanian team - from our fans, past and current players and staff, Tasmanian government, commercial partners, bloodlines and the entire community who made it possible,” said CEO Christine Finnegan.
“In five short years, the JackJumpers have become more than a basketball team. We’re part of the fabric of Tasmania.”
October 1 is the club’s ‘official birthday’ when, in 2020, the NBL unveiled the name, brand story and beloved mascot of Tasmania’s team in the national League. **Original NBL launch video available here
As the club makes a promising start to their 5th NBL season and prepares to enter a new era with the announcement of a Tasmanian WNBL license, the current playing group, coaches and staff marked the occasion, alongside Tasmanian Minister for Sport, Nick Duigan, at the club’s current training facility at Kingborough Sports Centre. The team is expected to move into the future home of the JackJumpers - the High Performance Trainign Centre in June 2020.
