Tasmania JackJumpers had plenty of talent on show over the weekend with the season opener of the NBL1 South.
Archie Woodhill returned for his second season with North West Thunder, coming up against Jarrad Weeks who has taken the reigns as Head Coach of the Hobart Chargers. Woodhill put up 13 points, 3 rebounds and 1 assist in the Tasmanian derby which kicked off the season in Ulverstone in dramatic fashion. With less than 2 minutes remaining and scores separated by the barest margins (Charges 85- Thunder 84), a power outage struck Harcourts Stadium in Ulverstone, bringing a premature end to the game.
After the issue wasn’t able to be rectified, an independent panel game has since been determined as a ‘No Result’. Both teams will compete in 21 games across the season, compared to 22 for the rest of the teams in the competition. The teams meet again in Round 9 on May 30 in Hobart in a double header with the Women’s game.
The Hobart Chargers Women made the trip to Launceston and weathered the Tornadoes in a 10-point win on their home court, with Captain, Kayla Steindl scoring 11 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists.
Brody Nunn and Nick Stoddart also returned to their NBL1 colours returning to the Knox Raiders and Ballarat Miners, respectively. Raiders started the season on a high, looking to defend their title with Nunn securing 19 points, 2 rebounds, 6 assists in a thrilling 4-point win over the Kilsyth Cobras. Nick Stoddart showed up for the Miners with 18 points, 1 rebound and 6 assists.
