JackJumpers welcome Tasmanian coaching talent Nathan Brereton

The Tasmania JackJumpers are excited to announce the appointment of Nathan Brereton as Assistant Coach and Assistant General Manager of Basketball. Brereton, a highly respected figure in Tasmanian and Australian basketball, brings a wealth of experience, strong relationships and a deep understanding of the local, national and international basketball landscape.

Tasmanian-born Brereton joins the club from his current role as an Assistant Coach with the NBA Global Academy, based in Canberra, where he has been responsible for identifying and developing top male talent in partnership with Basketball Australia’s Centre of Excellence.

“We’re thrilled to add Nate’s skillset and experience to the club, and to have another Tasmanian born talent representing the state. We had significant interest from around the country and world, but Nate’s connections and experience really stood out for us” Chief Operating Officer, Darren Smith said.

“His attitude, work ethic and values align really well with the foundations we have laid so far and, importantly, with the current coaching group” Smith said.

An accountant by trade, Brereton served as an Assistant Coach with the Hobart Chargers while working, before transitioning to the sport full time in 2020, taking up a role as Basketball Tasmania Northern Development Officer. 

Brereton joins Head Coach Scott Roth, and Assistant Coaches Mark Radford and Jarrad Weeks. His role will also encompass administrative, operational and management responsibilities in the basketball department, as Assistant General Manager of Basketball working alongside Darren Smith, Jack Soward, Ryan Carroll and the High Performance team.

“I'm thankful to the JackJumpers for this opportunity.  Watching from afar, it's been fantastic to see the success of the JackJumpers and how they've helped inspire Tasmanians through basketball.  I want to help contribute to that, so I'm excited to get home and get started!” Brereton said.

Brereton's appointment underscores the JackJumpers' commitment to strengthening ties with the Tasmanian community and ensuring strong local development pathways for players, coaches and administration.

Brereton will join Tasmania in mid-July ahead of the JackJumpers NBL26 preseason.
