The Tasmania JackJumpers fought tooth and nail but came up just short against the league-leading Illawarra Hawks, losing 89-84 in a closely contested game at the WIN Entertainment Centre. Despite the loss, Tasmania's resilience and fighting spirit were on full display, keeping the game competitive until the final moments.
After a balanced first quarter, where the JackJumpers trailed by only two points, the Hawks surged ahead with a dominant second-quarter performance. Illawarra's 14-4 run pushed their halftime lead to 49-36, as Tasmania struggled to find rhythm offensively, shooting just 35% compared to the Hawks’ 50%. However, the JackJumpers came out firing in the third quarter, led by Sean Macdonald’s red-hot shooting from beyond the arc and Reuben Te Rangi’s determined play, cutting the deficit to two points at one stage.
The fourth quarter was a battle of wills, with Tasmania refusing to back down. Majok Deng and Jordon Crawford provided timely baskets, while Fabijan Krslovic contributed an impressive double-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists. Despite narrowing the gap to just three points late in the game, the JackJumpers couldn’t quite overcome the Hawks' clutch execution, with Trey Kell III and Wani Swaka Lo Buluk delivering key plays for the home side.
Head Coach Scott Roth praised his team’s effort, noting their determination and focus over the past months. However, he acknowledged that foul trouble and missed opportunities proved costly. “The fight was there, and we’re learning from every game,” Roth said. The JackJumpers now shift their focus to bouncing back in their next matchup, with plenty of positives to build upon.
