Guests enlightened at JackJumpers Leadership event

The Tasmania JackJumpers inaugural Leaders’ Locker Room has been deemed a resounding success following an enlightening full day event at MyState Bank Arena on Wednesday.

Almost 150 participants engaged in leadership development activities, listened to visionary key note speakers and insightful panel interviews.

We’re sharing the IP [intellectual property] of the JackJumpers with the current and future leaders of Tasmania in an effort to inspire visionary thinking and strong culture-building” Christine Finnegan, JackJumpers Chief Commercial and Customers Officer said.

“There is a real lack of leadership development and practice-sharing opportunities here in Tasmania.

“We’ve obviously experienced some incredible success over the past 18 months and that’s been in large part thanks to the visionary leadership of owner Larry Kestelman and Head Coach Scott Roth so to have them share their experience, philosophies and stories is invaluable to the broader Tasmania business community” Finnegan said.

Global leadership expert, Colin Pidd led a thought-provoking introduction to the day before Lauren Jauncey interviewed NBL Executive Director and Owners, and JackJumpers Owner and Founder, Larry Kestelman who shared his life story, business strategies and vision behind the Tasmania JackJumpers.

“We’re trying to give back to the business community of Tasmania. We’ve had incredible support which is part of the reason the JackJumpers have been so successful” Kestelman said.

“Someone suggested to me that the JackJumpers have had a similar effect on Tasmania to that of MONA over the last decade or so, which is amazing to think of the impact the organisation has had and I’m very proud.

“It’s really about learning from each other, and not just about basketball but how does Tasmania as a state keep progressing and capitalising on the success of the last few years.

“The JackJumpers and Tasmania are not just national brands now, they’re gaining traction in overseas markets as well” Kestelman said.

The day also included a business panel comprising of some of the State’s most prominent senior managers and company founders, who shared their personal and professional journeys.

The second half of the day focused on high performing teams with the crowd hearing from JackJumpers players Clint Steindl, Josh Magette and Isaac White, who provided insights into the daily habits and expectations of the group which allow them to foster a high-performing environment and create strong cultural foundations.

The highlight of the day for many was an hour-long presentation from Head Coach Scott Roth. Participants were completely captivated by his life story and his path to Tasmania – a place he now proudly calls ‘home’.

“Sport is unique. It’s not always fluid and there’s a lot of constant changes and pivoting, with coaches changing and players changing. I think the business leaders will be able to take away a few learnings from what we do in terms of setting our expectations and our culture” Roth said.

Roth delved deeply into process of the club reaching the Grand Finals in the organisation’s inaugural season, explaining while it was an extraordinary feat, it wasn’t by accident or fluke. The foundations of hard work, grittiness and galvanising high-character individuals were paramount to the immediate success of the club.

“People want to know what’s the ‘secret sauce’ of what transpired down here and why there was success so early on, so sharing what my vision was, it all comes down to the high-character people that I brought in as part of this organisation, and the players driving the culture” Roth said.

“There is no secret sauce, it’s about creating a culture where people can be themselves and investing in each other, a collective buy-in to what you’re trying to achieve, and ultimately showing up every single day and doing the work”.

The JackJumpers will explore the possibility of taking the Leaders’ Locker Room to the North of the State in 2023.
