Tasmania Jewels set to shine in the WNBL
Tasmania will once again shine on the national basketball stage, as the state enters a new chapter in 2026, with Tasmania Basketball Pty Ltd. unveiling the name, logos and brand story of the state’s WNBL team - the Tasmania Jewels.
Following the WNBL awarding Tasmania the 9th license in August, the announcement of the brand identity marks an exciting milestone as preparations accelerate toward the team’s debut WNBL season in 2026.
The name Tasmania Jewels is drawn from a direct link to the Queen Ant, the leader of the ant colony and the fitting counterpart to the men’s arm of the club, the Tasmania JackJumpers.
The primary logo features the shape of Tasmania as the jewel centre in a crown formed from the shape of the ant mandibles, as well as the face of the queen ant creating direct synergies with the JackJumpers’ primary logo.
CEO Christine Finnegan said the new identity captures the spirit of the community and the aspirations of the program.
“Tasmania is the Jewel in the crown of Australia and now the Jewel in the crown of the Queen Ant, and a force to be reckoned with in the WNBL.
“We’re incredibly proud to launch a brand that we believe represents the unique beauty of the state of Tasmania and the unbreakable resilience of our team and our community” she said.
The brand launch is the culmination of months of brand development, which canvassed the Tasmanian public through a community engagement campaign, to establish an identity that truly represents the Tasmanian community and gives female athletes a path of inspiration and aspiration.
The Jewels will maintain the Tasmanian state colours, Forrest green and Mandible Yellow, and introduce ‘Eucalyptus Green’ as a feminine accent colour of the women’s brand palette.
The brand identity celebrates the island’s rich natural heritage, drawing inspiration from Tasmania’s unique beauty, rugged landscapes, and the strength and resilience of its people. It reflects the team’s commitment to representing Tasmania with pride, toughness and ensuring the island state shines on the national stage.
Premier Jeremy Rockliff welcomed the announcement of the team’s identity.
“The entry of the Tasmania JackJumpers into the NBL was the catalyst for the wave of Tasmanians who are putting down screens, picking up basketballs and getting active.
“Now, with the Tasmania Jewels kicking off in 2026, we can eagerly anticipate a new wave of inspired junior basketballers. It’s a tremendous day, especially for communities in the North and North-West Coast who are set to benefit from a significant number of Jewels games” he said.
In July this year, Prime Group’s alternative asset manager, Altor Capital, bought a controlling stake in the Tasmania JackJumpers in the NBL. Altor Capital are now pleased to be the proud owners of the club expanded arm in the WNBL, the Tasmania Jewels.
Altor Capital’s Chief Investment Officer, Ben Harrison, said the investment in the WNBL Tasmanian expansion club was a perfect partnership given the growth of the women’s game in Australia and globally.
“The Tasmania Jewels represent an incredible investment opportunity. The WNBL is the oldest and most successful women’s league in Australia, and we are proud to be part of continued expansion through the Tasmania Jewels in the 2026/27 season.
“Altor Capital has seen what the JackJumpers have done for the people of Tasmania. Like the JackJumpers, the Jewels will represent all of Tasmania in a sport booming among young women,” Harrison said.
To celebrate the brand unveiling, the club has launched the Tasmania Jewels ‘Got the W’ Membership campaign, inviting the Tasmanian public to be a part of the build up to the club’s inaugural WNBL season.
Fans can sign up to the ‘Got the W’ Membership for just $10.00 which includes a bumper sticker and digital membership, as well as first priority access to inaugural season seated memberships when they go on sale ahead of the 26/27 WNBL Season. Members can also secure a limited run Tasmania Jewels Launch T-shirt.
All fans who sign up as a Tasmania Jewels Member before December 12 will go into the draw to win a free spot in a junior clinic led by WNBA Defensive Player of the Year, Alanna Smith or former WNBL player and Tasmanian Jewels Assistant General Manager, Kayla Steindl.
The Tasmania Jewels are proudly supported by Foundation Principal Partner St Lukes and supported by the Tasmanian Government.
