The Hungry Jack’s National Basketball League is inviting the people of Tasmania to have their say in the naming of the state’s new NBL team.
The NBL has launched a four-week campaign asking Tasmanians of all ages to nominate their team names ahead of Tasmania’s entry into the league in the 2021-22 season.
Tasmanians can submit up to three names each at www.nbltas.com.au. Those who enter have a chance to win four season tickets, a signed inaugural jersey and meet the players from the new team.
Hungry Jack’s NBL Owner and Executive Chairman Larry Kestelman said: “We need the help of all Tasmanians to name their new team and give it a strong identity that captures the spirit of Tasmania.
“This will be a brand new team for Tasmania and an opportunity to come up with a brand new name. The only requirement is that Tasmania is part of the name as this will be a team that represents the whole of the state.
“The rest of it is up to people’s imaginations and we look forward to receiving lots of different and fun names and some great debate among everybody over the coming weeks. We will then form a shortlist and announce the name and colours of the new team later this year.”
Tasmanian Minister for Sport and Recreation, Jane Howlett, said Tasmanians had the opportunity to be part of history by having their say in selecting a name for the team.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for Tasmanians to embrace our brand new team. We have so much to celebrate when it comes to our rich sporting history and culture in Tasmania.
“I have no doubt the passion of Tasmanians who have wanted a team of their own back in the NBL will see some inspiring names put forward for consideration.”
The NBL recently finalised an agreement with the Tasmanian Government to set up its 10th team in Tasmania from 2021-22. The team has hit the ground running, advertising the first key roles which can be found here.
Expressions of interest can also be sent to jobs@nbl.com.au. Expressions of interest for prospective corporate partners in the new team can be made by contacting business@nbltas.com.au.
“There is much to be done over the next 12 months as Tasmania prepares to return to the NBL after a 25-year absence and we couldn’t be more excited about what lies ahead,” Kestelman said.
“This includes the $68.5 million upgrade of the Derwent Entertainment Centre, including $20 million for a community four court multisport facility. The team will bring new jobs and investment to the state and deliver important economic and tourism benefits for Tasmania.
“Basketball is a global sport and the NBL team will also showcase Tasmania on the national stage and around the world. This is why the name is so important and we look forward to everyone having their say.”
