JackJumpers turn Teal for S.H.E charity game

The Tasmania JackJumpers are proud to launch the second year of the annual ‘Teal Game’, supporting local gynaecological charity S.H.E [Support, Hope, Education].

S.H.E is the official charity partner of the JackJumpers with the inaugural Teal Game in February 2022 raising more than $27,000 dollars for the Tasmanian non-for-profit organisation.

The JackJumpers partnership with S.H.E is motivated by a lack of awareness around gynaecological cancers and the need for men to be part of the conversation and breaking down any stigma.

“We’re really pleased to be able provide a platform to raise awareness and funds for S.H.E. Last year was a fantastic start to the partnership and we hope to make this year even bigger and better” CEO Simon Brookhouse said.

The cause holds special significance to the organisation as Tasmania JackJumpers Board Member, Scott Harris is Chair of the S.H.E. foundation, with his wife Jo currently battling Stage 4 Ovarian cancer.

Over 1500 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer every year and sadly, the current 5-year survival rate is just 48%.

“Jo’s condition is fragile to say the least. At times she looks and feels quite well and then she could get an infection or treatment knocks her around and suddenly the doctors are preparing us for the worst again“ S.H.E Chairman, Scott Harris said.

“The JackJumpers Teal Game last year was an emotional and incredible occasion for our family.  And it gave a huge boost in raising awareness around gynaecological cancers, I hope that prompted many women to be aware of the limited signs and symptoms and go and get checked out if they have any concerns at all” Harris said.

Jo Harris presented to the playing and coaching group at practice last month, telling her moving story about her diagnosis and treatment journey, and the impact it has had on her family including her teenage sons.

S.H.E is working towards the organisation’s dream of building a cancer wellness centre in the Hobart CBD to give cancer sufferers and their families a suitable care facility in their home state at a time when they need it most.

This vision was bolstered by the recent announcement of a partnership between the Tasmanian Government, the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, University of Tasmania and S.H.E, which was inspired by Jo’s experience and S.H.E’s work in Tasmania.

“Three years ago, Jo was given just months to live. She’s still here, still fighting and we want to help anyone going through this to be able to have world-class care right here in Tasmania” Harris said.

JackJumpers are proud to support S.H.E’s ongoing work and the establishment of the partnership to continue to increase awareness and further fundraising efforts.

A number of new and ongoing initiatives are being undertaken to raise funds and awareness in the lead up to and at the JackJumpers ‘Teal Game’ against the Perth Wildcats on January 29;

• The JackJumpers will wear a specially designed Teal jersey and shooting shirt, as well as teal socks for the game.
• The signed game worn jerseys will be up for auction following the game with all proceeds to be donated to S.H.E.
• Replica Teal jerseys will be for sale online and at MyState Bank Arena with a portion of proceeds to be donated to S.H.E.
• S.H.E will also have donation stations available on the MyState Bank Arena concourse, with all donations over $30 receiving a teal bucket hat
• Will Magnay has genrously donated his game worn Teal Shoes, which will be the game day auction item. Magnay will sign the shoes and have a photo with the winning bidder following Sunday's game. 
• JackJumpers partner, SRT Logistics will again donate to S.H.E for every 3-pointer scored by the JackJumpers during the game with ‘Threes-for-SHE’
• JackJumpers Partner, MyState Bank will again donate to S.H.E for every steal the JackJumpers get during the game with ‘Steals for Teal’.
• ‘Virtual seats’ will be available for sale from early January. While the game is sold out, fans are encouraged to buy a virtual seat with the proceeds to go to S.H.E. Fans will receive a graphic which they are encouraged to post to social media and show their support.
